Maine has its struggles with opioid addiction. Opioids are generally classified as painkillers. They are highly addictive and prone to cause overdoses. These drugs bind to the brains area that controls emotions and pain. People feel extremely good when abusing these drugs. They love the intense high. However, like any harmful drug, the body builds up tolerance and the addict must continue to take higher doses to achieve the same high. It is a vicious cycle that can only end in death or rehab.
Painkillers are on the rise largely due to a high increase in prescriptions. People get hooked on their painkiller drug and will do anything they can to get their next fix. They will even turn to heroin, which produces the same effect and is much cheaper to obtain. People, from all walks of life, are hooked on painkillers. Even teenagers have found a way into medicine cabinets to steal opioids and share them with friends.
Communities across the country are trying to fight drug epidemics by education their citizens, and strengthening drug enforcement protocols and laws. Some communities are even offering amnesty to citizens who walk seek help. The only real solution to breaking free of drug addiction is to get professional rehab help.
What Rehab Centers Offer
Rehab centers provide the medication and therapies that can help patients get back on the right track to sober living. Not everyone starts out wanting to be an addict. It happens, and the first brave step is to seek professional, medical help. Upon acceptance, the rehab center will conduct a physical and mental assessment of the patient. Medications, prescribed by the centers doctor, can handle detox. The concern is that mental disorders may be overlooked, like depression or mood swings. Addressing mental disorders can reduce the chance of relapse. Doctors will monitor the patient through a residential program and provide needed treatments.
Patients receive medications and support around-the-clock to help them through painful withdrawal symptoms. Patients are also encouraged to start eating healthy again because addiction can drain the body of essential vitamins and minerals. As healing takes place in the body, patients attend counseling where they can participate one-on-one with their therapist, or attend group of family counseling.
Group therapy is effective as it allows patients to bond with others who have experienced the same struggles to overcome addiction. Family therapy is most effective, as families can provide a major source of support and encouragement for their loved ones. For many families, providing that support may be difficult as addiction divides families.
Aftercare remains an essential part of therapy. Patients will reenter the world with all of its temptations and triggers that may have led to addiction in the first place. Aftercare can provide continued counseling and cognitive therapies that help patients make the connection between their own thinking and actions. Patients are also encouraged to join groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Membership is free in both organizations. All that is required is a true intent to live a life of sobriety.Media Contact
