(March 16, 2017)
PITTSBURGH, March 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway Health, a leading Medicaid and Medicare Advantage managed care organization (MCO), announced today that its Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Madden, will retire from service in April 2017. For more than a decade, Madden has held this important, challenging and evolving role that combined his strategic vision with passion and leadership skills that brought together a diverse and talented set of medical and clinical professionals who focus on the need for safe, high quality healthcare for Gateway's vulnerable members.
Madden, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Georgetown School of Medicine, started his career as a family practice resident, a physician at a community health center and the Executive Director of a multi-specialty physician group at St. Vincent Health System in Erie, PA before moving over to the payer side of the business as Medical Director for Medical Performance Management at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Pittsburgh, PA. Amongst the many accomplishments during his tenure at Gateway include continuing his predecessor's work with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, collaborating with Pennsylvania's Department of Human Services (DSH) and other health plans to develop opioid use clinics and treatment for mothers and a model of care for treating addicted babies; developing and launching the Telephonic Psychiatric Consultation Service (TiPS) with other Pennsylvania MCOs to improve responsiveness and efficiency for pediatric psychiatric needs and bringing care management into the physical practice so that patients are treated holistically.
"One of the things that makes Gateway a standout MCO is our longstanding tradition of putting our members first while balancing compassionate care with cost effectiveness," said Madden. "We've realized that you can care about patients and still focus on business and functional operating efficiency. Both parts of the equation are okay and necessary."
Says President and CEO, Patti Darnley, "Dr. Mike Madden has added great value to Gateway over the years and our business and members are better for it. He recognized that positive relationships with providers and providing the right care to our members when it might not always be what they want, but what they need is critical to our long term success and sustainability."
Madden will be succeeded by Dr. Steven E. Szebenyi, who is currently the SVP of Healthcare Management and Chief Medical Officer for Health Partners Plans in Philadelphia, PA and has his M.D and B.A. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University. Szebenyi has a strong and broad background in managed care and will start at Gateway in March. Madden will remain on staff for one month during the transition and has also agreed to a consulting agreement with Gateway once Szebenyi has been fully integrated as the new Chief Medical Officer.
