http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6910019?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Wed, 10 May 2017 14:21:53 +0000 Musician Scott Wattles Matt and Heather talk to Scott Wattles, a musician and aortic dissection patient, and Physician Assistant Brett Taylor about the dangers of aortic dissections. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6910019?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WCIA all of effingham county and in your community. you've heard of a heart attack. what about an aortic dissection? >>matt: it's remarkable when someone survives the diagnosis. just ask our guest. thanks for being here both of you. scott, these are your sunglasses. you impersonate elvis. let's talk about that real quick. this has been a lifelong passion for you. >> it started through church. i used it to say why would anyone want to walk around looking like elvis. the way it's turned out, it's been a blessing because i've entertained a lot of people. i think my wife would like the sideburns to come off. >>matt: it's part of the show and message which we will talk about in a second. i want to ask you about aortic dissection. tell us about that. >> it's a tear in the aorta. an artery that runs outside the heart. it's a life-threatening illness that has to be fixed surgically. in scott's case specifically, it was detected and he was brought up to carl and surgically fixed. >>heather: when you say detected, were you experiencing symptoms or what was going on? >> i had tremendous back pain. and was not feeling myself obviously and was weaker. again, i was stubborn. my wife was saying you need to go to the doctor. i'm going, it's just back pain. i worked out, i do cardio, i like to think i am in good shape. it was december 7, a different version of the day. the pain was tremendous. luckily i got to the hospital. was identified quick enough that it was a dissection. carl saved my life, what else can i say? >>matt: how common is a dissection? >> not very common. we do a fair amount but it's not something that people walk off the street daily. >>matt: when you are getting these symptoms like scott - - >> its classic symptoms like scott had. usually it's excruciating pain. that's a tip off. i'm sure if scott would do it again, i'm sure he would go in it was soon enough. >>heather: what if he had gone in sooner and was complaining about back pain. >> it would have still have been the same process. it's not something we can wait on. it's an emergency. >>matt: tell us about scott's recovery. >> scott, like he had mentioned, he was in pretty good shape. he's not our typical patient all the time. we had a good proto- classroom to work with. once we got through the surgery, everything went good. we had a team that does this all the time. that's part of the reason we had a good outcome. his recovery was quicker than you would expect with a normal aortic dissection. he was out of the hospital in eight days i think. >> yeah, to make a return. >> eight days is pretty quick. scott is very motivated as you will probably find out. that's a big part of recovery with these and having a support system with his family has really helped him out. >>heather: we were mentioning off camera, this is what happened to john ritter, alan thicke, it's not that common but some big names have been effected by it. >> i feel like i'm the chosen one to share this as much as i can. it's not very common so it can be missed. of course carl, they didn't miss it. >> when people come into the er, with the symptoms, red flags. cardiac is the first thing you want to rule out. one of the first things. >>matt: you have an important show you want to talk about. christmas show at effingham - -. that's the first time we ever had to cancel a show. it will not obviously be a christmas show but we are calling it one night with elvis. it's a makeup concert may 13 for those who had tickets for the christmas show can bring those tickets and spend a night with me. with that, we are going to make a donation to the american heart association as well. as i said earlier, i feel it's real important - - i have been so blessed to be a survivor. you feel you owe it to serve others. >>matt: and to share the knowledge and to push on. i will return to you your sunglasses. you will stick around and do a performance.
