http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/7109548?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 28 Sep 2017 21:50:24 +0000 Kim Mills Breast Surgery Exercise Class Kim Mills Breast Surgery Exercise Class http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/7109548?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WCIA instrument getting back to 100 percent after breast surgery can seem like a difficult task but there experts to help you make a full recovery and help you feel like yourself again. how many people do you see regularly that are recovering from breast cancer? >> to be honest they schedule who they want to to come to our classes and we are grateful for every one of them. >> they are all in that recovery stage. and so you are helping them build that bridge from a stressful life threatening illness to living a full life so let's learn more. what does the class teach you? >> we have a booklet we give to every participant and that's a number of different exercises because we want people to get their range and do activities they are accustomed to. we want to make sure they are doing them correctly so they have pictures of every single one of the exercises and a description on how to do it and within the time they are learning these exercises they are able to get me helping them out. we can tell them the timing of when it is appropriate to do these activities. so it could actually be harmful if they took the book and did all the exercises and didn't realize this not what they needed. >> that goes not only for this kind of surgery but as a rule. you can't go and lift up your refrigerator. what is the connection between breast cancer and exercise and why is that important for people who are recovering? >> we want to get people up and moving because that prevents more cancer from coming on. we want to make sure people are moving and you need to be moving see you can do the things in life. if someone was just going to guard and protect that area they would get a frozen shoulder or need therapy. so we want to get people moving in appropriate ways. >> talk to me about edema. >> in addition to teaching exercises we want to make sure people understand what lymphedema is and how it comes about. sadly there are people that after having breast surgery they have had to had lymph nodes removed or radiated in that system is not able to function so we have a circulatory system and a lymphatic system where fluid flows and that is important to try to fight off the things that are harmful so when people end up having lymph nodes removed they can end up with fluid filling up their arms so it can get large or hard and they can have problems with infection and so is super important that we educate the patients with what they can do to reduce their risk and also we can give them an idea of what it would be like so they can make a wise choice. >> and you can get a sense of that when you can do those exercises. >> you can call 383636 to register. it's a free class paid for by a donor and everyone can come. we want everyone to know that any patient is invited to come and attend these classes. >>
