Leonard Barry Smith, D.D.S., is recognized by Continental Who's Who

CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Leonard Barry Smith, D.D.S., is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional Member in the field of Dentistry.                

Dr. Smith serves as a Pediatric Dentist at Dental Care for Children, the first pediatric dentistry in Calgary upon its opening in 1972. He brings over 49 years of field experience, as well as expertise in the areas of pediatric dentistry, preventative care, medical education, cleanings, checkups, extractions, fluoride treatments and orthodontics, to his role.

In addition to his work in practice, Dr. Smith serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary Department of Pediatrics. He is also a renowned advocate for the oral needs of children, and as such, is the Founder and President of the nonprofit organization titled the Foundation for a Healthy Mouth – titled Healthy Child in the United States. Additionally, he is the published author of "My Smile," "What Do You See" and "Pediatric Oral Pathology." 



Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Alberta in 1968. He then completed a hospital residency at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital in 1970 and earned a Master of Science degree and Pedodontic Dentistry certification from the Ohio State University in 1972.                               

To further his professional development, Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Life Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a Life Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

In 2005, Dr. Smith received the Integrity Award from the Rotary Club of Calgary, Downtown Chapter and received a special achievement award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2014 for distinguished service and dedication to the mission and goals of the Academy.

Dr. Smith is available to speak to other professionals about the reality of Early Childhood Caries and the fact that this is an infectious disease that is about more than just baby teeth. He details the impact this preventable disease, which is now the most common, chronic infectious disease in children age five and younger in North America.

This disease affects 28 percent of all children 2-5 years of age (5.6 million in North America) and of that 23 percent of children never get any oral health care (1.3 million in North America).Those children who do not receive care, or whose care is delayed, suffer from sleep deprivation, malnutrition, neurodevelopmental impacts and are at risk of developing toxic stress.

Children with Early Childhood Caries who are neglected and or abused have a high potential of developing addictive behaviors, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease as they approach early adulthood. Dr. Smith also analyzes the impact it will have and on the family and its relationship to domestic violence, along with its impact on society in general.
