Responding to the more than 800 recorded opioid-related deaths in Arizona since June, the state legislature has approved a sweeping plan to combat opioid abuse, misuse, and diversion. The vote was unanimous in both the House and Senate and quickly signed into law by Governor Doug Ducey. The bill places stringent caps on prescription quantities; limits dosage for opioid-naïve patients; and implements a mandatory e-prescription filing system for clinicians. It also calls for broader availability of the overdose-reversal agent naloxone, and provides $10,000,000 in new funding for rehabilitation. A “Good Samaritan" provision is included to encourage 911 reporting of an overdose without fear of drug related prosecution.
Commenting on the measure, PAINWeekEnd faculty member David Cosio, PhD, said “The speed and unanimity with which the state of Arizona has acted is reflective of the extraordinary regulatory environment that all pain practitioners are facing. The need for timely education on pain management alternatives and pain practice essentials has never been greater. Above all, it's critical that we not lose sight of the most important stakeholder in the room-the patient."
PAINWeekEnd on March 10 and 11 at the Hilton Scottsdale, 6333 North Scottsdale Road, will be an educational and exciting 2-day program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 12.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.
Dr. Cosio continued, “Drawing on my experience as an outpatient practitioner, I'm excited to be lecturing on the patient/provider relationship that is needed to establish appropriate boundaries and to provide insights to help participants effectively deal with chronic pain presentations and substance use disorders." Dr. Cosio is a pain psychologist in the outpatient management clinic of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He will be presenting The Gentle Art of Saying No: How to Establish Appropriate Boundaries With Chronic Pain Patients, as well as Falling Down the Rabbit Hole: A Primer for Chronic Pain Management and Substance Abuse Disorders.
Commercially supported activities, addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics, will also be presented. The online registration fee for this PAINWeekEnd Conference is $199. Go to painweekend.org for more information.
PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2018 PAINWeek National Conference, September 4-8, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the current online published price.
