2019 USPHS IPEC Award Winner and Finalists Recognized for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice with Underserved Populations
One national winner and four honorable mentions receive
recognition for excellence in interprofessional education

Education Collaborative (IPEC) are pleased to announce Massachusetts
General Hospital (MGH) Institute of Health Professions as the winner of
the 2019 Public Health Excellence in Interprofessional Education
Collaboration Award. USPHS and IPEC commend MGH and schools across the
country working to promote, encourage, and support interprofessional
education and collaborative practice to ensure the health of individuals
and populations. The IPE in Excellence Award acknowledges
interprofessional education learning activities and experiences designed
to enhance interprofessional team practice and improve healthcare
delivery.

innovative collaboration can scale up to promote community health,”
notes Pamela M. Schweitzer, PharmD, BCACP, Rear Admiral (ret), U.S.
Public Health Service. “These programs have changed lives and these

long-range outcomes addressing the social determinants of health and
advancing health equity.”
In its third year, USPHS and IPEC received several inspiring
applications from institutions around the country and applaud MGH’s
mission focused on bridge-to-care services to vulnerable populations.
The MGH team will be recognized at the IPEC Meeting on June 13-14, 2019
at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Learning Center
in Washington, DC.
In addition to an overall awardee, USPHS and IPEC also recognize four

Project submissions were assessed for their lasting impact on community
health. In addition, applicants were required to demonstrate a
relationship between interprofessional collaborative care, health
professions education, and health outcomes.

outcomes. In turn, their steadfast and successful efforts benefit

Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. “It’s great to see how MGH has
evolved its six-year project, after having received an honorable mention
in 2017. Their continuous hard work and innovation offers a great
interprofessional model of learning and practice.”

IPEC’s mission is to ensure that new and current health professionals
are proficient in the competencies essential for patient-centered,
community- and population-oriented, interprofessional, collaborative
practice. Eligible institutional members must be associations that

that provide an educational program leading to the award of one or more
academic degrees to students in one or more of the health professions
