Patient Safety Movement Foundation CEO continues to shed light on patient and health worker safety ahead of World Patient Safety Day
IRVINE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#PLAN4ZERO–Today, Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s CEO and MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety Executive Director, Dr. Dave Mayer, kicks off the D.C. portion of Dave’s Virtual Walk Across America for Healthcare Safety. Dr. Mayer is walking across the nation and raising awareness for patient and health worker safety, leading up to World Patient Safety Day on September 17, 2020.
Dr. Mayer will be starting the D.C. portion of his walk at Arlington Cemetery and will make his way to Nationals Park, stopping along the way at the White House and the Capitol Building. He’s completed walks in Phoenix, Denver, Milwaukee, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore, and plans to complete nearly 3,000 miles over the course of his journey, essentially walking across the United States, finishing sometime in early 2021.
He themed the walks around one of his personal passions and America’s favorite pastime, baseball, and has been walking to stadiums across the country, raising awareness by meeting patient safety leaders and advocates along the way, sharing stories, and honoring lives that have been lost due to preventable medical error.
“The coronavirus pandemic has really put a spotlight on the need for patient and health worker safety—something that many of us have been concerned with for a long time,” he says. “Medical error is the cause of over 200,000 deaths in America each year, behind heart disease and cancer, and we need to bring attention to the importance of improving the care system, support our health workforce and ensure better outcomes.”
Dave’s Virtual Walk Across America for Healthcare Safety will continue during the summer; additional public walks will be announced on Twitter at @WalkForPtSafety, so be sure to follow along for updates.
