Who You See FIRST Can Significantly Affect Your Life and Your Wallet!

For life-threatening emergencies, calling 911 and activating EMS is the answer!

When you have a tooth problem, you see a Dentist first, right?

When you have an eye problem, you may see your eye Doctor first, right?

Well, when you have symptoms related to common conditions affecting your muscles, tendons, spine, nerves, bones, and joints, you may want to invest some time in researching and finding an expert Physical Therapist…and start there!

Over my 23 years of clinical practice, I have often been the 3rd or 4th stop for patients with these common conditions. They had been living on medications, had several different expensive tests, had visited surgeons prematurely, and in some unfortunate cases, actually had a surgical procedure for a condition they didn’t have! Many still had no answers by the time they saw me!

Some were fortunate and were able to avoid an unnecessary surgery! I have a recent story…..

A female Nurse Practitioner and successful triathlete were in a state of devastation because she was unable to run due to excessive knee pain. She was like many others and only came to me by chance. She had already scheduled a surgery, and the only reason she found me was that her Surgeon recommended that she go to “a place ” that had an ALTER-G Anti-Gravity treadmill so that she could get some kind of conditioning to help with her post-surgical recovery. Her life took a turn for the better. To keep this story short, she had a condition that was easily correctable.

She cried tears of joy that she could run again without pain, she canceled and avoided surgery, and successfully resumed her competitive running career!

Not all Physical Therapists are experts, so do your due Diligence. I have another recent story that found one woman far behind the 8 ball!

A 56 y/o female marathon runner who recently underwent a 3D Lapiplasty. (a successful surgical procedure for those compromised by a bunion at the great toe) She had to go out of town for the surgery because Surgeons in her hometown had only performed a few of the 3D Lapiplasty procedures, and she wasn’t betting on inexperience. Her problems began when she chose to go to a Physical Therapist based on the option for free care.

At 13 weeks post-surgery, she must have had a hunch that she wasn’t quite where she expected to be as she signed up for a complimentary screening with me. Within 5 minutes, I was able to identify 2 critical issues that appeared to have been overlooked or something went wrong with the surgery. Was it a nerve or a tendon cut accidentally? One of her great toe joints was frozen, and a very important tendon to her great toe was not functioning. To keep this story short, it was determined that the Physical Therapist she was seeing was treating her for everything but her 2 most critical issues. This woman’s ability to walk and even run again was being compromised treatment after treatment. In short, the Physical Therapist told her that she didn’t mobilize her toe because she didn’t want to hurt her. Needless to say, I placed her on a new, progressive, skilled path.

So, for common conditions affecting your muscles, tendons, spine, nerves, bones, and joints, it has become increasingly recommended to visit an expert Physical Therapist FIRST, in fact, all 50 states have passed laws paving the way for consumers to see Physical Therapists without the need for a referral. Some states are more restrictive than others.

Your diligence in searching for and finding a true expert Physical Therapist to see FIRST may be the most critical decision you ever make. It can make or break your recreational and/or competitive athletic career, determine your surgical or non-surgical fate, or even significantly affect your ability to carry out the most basic functional daily activities. (walking, sitting, sleeping, running, working, etc.)
