SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC / ACCESSWIRE / January 26, 2021 / At the early age of 24, Selin Benjamin Bocio Richardson known professionally as “Dr. Benjamin Bocio” has served thousands of people living in extreme poverty in the Caribbean. This young trailblazer tackles poverty and inequality by implementing an innovative approach in which sustainable resources are redistributed so that economic inequality is reduced.
Dr. Benjamin Bocio, currently the CEO of FUMEBO is a health activist, dentist, and social entrepreneur focused on building an equitable health system for all. When he was 14 years of age, he co-founded with his father FUMEBO (Bocio Medical Foundation), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality access to health resources to underserved communities in the Dominican Republic. Through FUMEBO, Dr. Benjamin Bocio takes sustainable resources from the richest places in the world and redistributes them to those in need. In the last 10 years, FUMEBO has served over 75,000 patients without quality access to primary healthcare, medicines, and sustainable resources.
In addition to leading his own charity, Dr. Benjamin Bocio’s social entrepreneurship has been recognized worldwide. In 2019, he was selected to address over 2,000 young leaders from 196 countries at the One Young World Summit in London, in the Plenary Session: Can Innovation Solve Economic Inequality? with the Nobel Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus, former Prime Minister of Norway Gro Harlem, Professor Thuli Madonsela, and other notable figures. In the same year, Dr. Benjamin Bocio was awarded the title of “Emerging Leader” by the Policy Center of the New South under the high patronage of the King Mohamed VI of Morocco.
Last year, Dr. Benjamin Bocio won the Covid-19 Young Leaders Fund, a fund for young leaders working on the frontline and sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, One Young World, and United Way. Backed by these companies, Dr. Bocio created an initiative called “Vital Boxes”.
Vital Boxes aims to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers on the COVID-19 frontline and other essential resources such as food, disinfection products, and surgical masks to families living in underserved communities. More than 2,000 low-income families have successfully benefited from the initiative.
Dr. Benjamin Bocio graduated from dentistry in the Dominican Republic and in July of this year, he will begin a two-year advanced standing program at Boston University. The dentist-entrepreneur mentioned that this program will allow him to continue advocating harder for an equitable and sustainable healthcare system for all.
