Rothman Index COVID-19 Research Receives STAR Research Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine

COVID-19 award-winning research presented at Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#clinicalsurveillance–The 50th Critical Care Congress has wrapped up after an exciting two weeks of presentations, research, and education sessions. PeraHealth is pleased to announce that Joseph Beals, PhD, Chief Analytics Officer, has been awarded a 2021 Star Research Achievement Award by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Out of more than a thousand submissions reviewed, Dr. Beals’ work, titled “Early identification of COVID-19 patients susceptible to rapid deterioration using the Rothman Index” scored highly enough to merit selection for the award. The SCCM Star Research Achievement Award is intended to recognize excellence in critical care research.

Dr. Beals presented his group’s findings as part of the COVID-19 Pandemic Leadership session at the 50th Critical Care Congress on Sunday, January 31st, 2021. The study analyzed thousands of COVID-19 patients across four hospitals in Connecticut and Maryland and demonstrated that at the point of hospital admission the Rothman Index (RI) score, a patient acuity metric, can accurately categorize COVID-19 patients into high-risk and low-risk populations, predicting the patient’s subsequent need for ICU level care, mechanical ventilation, or risk of in-hospital death. Recognition of this high-quality original investigative research with a Star Research Award underscores PeraHealth’s dedication to supporting its hospital partners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rothman Index, developed by PeraHealth, is the only proven machine learning algorithm to automatically derive a real-time, FDA-cleared acuity score from the vast amount of data in the electronic health record to create a visual trend of any patient’s condition over time. The Rothman Index offers an objective clinical metric for hospitals to rapidly identify COVID-19 patients that are at the highest risk of deterioration. Also, importantly the RI identifies “low-risk” COVID-19 patients who may be cared for in adjunct facilities and be placed on a path for early discharge from the hospital. The Rothman Index’s patented algorithm calculates a patient’s health score from vital signs, lab results, and the hundreds of factors comprising the full range of body-system nursing assessments.

“Our work adds a new dimension to understanding risk for COVID patients, and we show how it could aid providers in making difficult admission and level-of-care placement decisions,” said PeraHealth Chief Analytics Officer, Joseph Beals, PhD. “Receiving a Star Research Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine highlights the important efforts our hospital partners are making to help advance innovation and research even in the midst of the pandemic challenges.”

Dr. Beals will be presenting more on the same topic at the upcoming AMIA Virtual Informatics Summit on March 22, 2021.

If you would like to hear more from the research team, consider viewing Dr. Beals’ recent webinar, “How to Identify High Risk COVID-19 Patients upon Hospital Admission.”

About PeraHealth

PeraHealth is a SaaS software company that uses the Rothman Index to transform the clinical and financial efficiency of healthcare.
