Dr. Raymond Rezaie Discusses How You Can Prepare Kids For The Doctor’s Office

Family physician Dr. Raymond Rezaie is going to help you make a trip to the Doctor’s office with your kids as successfully as possible.

MONTREAL, QC / ACCESSWIRE / March 17, 2021 / Many children, and especially young children, are afraid of visits to the doctor’s office. Often, they must get shots, which can be especially painful. Even if no shots are involved, many children still grow anxious when visiting a physician. That’s why Dr. Raymond Rezaie is going to share some tips for preparing your kids young and old for visiting the doctor’s office.

“I know many children are nervous when they visit the doctor’s office,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie, “as a family physician I go to great lengths to try to soothe their nerves. Still, a bit of preparation can make the visit easier for all involved, and especially the children themselves.”

First, it’s important to try to make the visit to the doctor’s office as positive of an experience as possible. Using soothing language and complementing your child for his or her good behavior is wise. With older children, the compliments may not go as far, but you still want them to see the doctor’s office as a good place to be.

If your child is old enough, you should also explain why going to the doctor is important. Even a small child can understand that the doctor can help them feel better if they are sick. A bit of discomfort now could lead to a lot more comfort later.

“It’s easy to underestimate how much your children understand,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie says, “but often they do have a good idea of what’s going on. Sitting down and talking with your child a day or two before the visit is smart.”

You also want your child to be comfortable before the visit. This means ensuring that they are fed and have had enough sleep. That said, if your child has high energy levels, a bit of playtime at home to burn off excess energy is also smart.

When it comes to food and beverages, however, make sure you always follow a doctor’s directions. For example, it’s necessary to withhold food before surgery. Otherwise, your child could vomit and choke during the procedure.

Preparation before a visit to the doctor’s office is wise. Once you arrive at the office there are also steps you can take to make the whole experience easier.

Sometimes, seeing the doctor can take a long time and you may be in the waiting room for a while. So make sure you bring stuff to keep your children occupied. This might mean books, or a tablet loaded with their favorite shows and video games. The right distractions can keep your child occupied.

“I try to make my office as comfortable as possible for children,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie says. “Still, you know your child best, and what will keep him or her occupied. Feel free to bring along what you need.”
