You Survived COVID-19 – But Will You Avoid the Largest Epidemic of the 21st Century?

A diabetes expert warns that it’s time for a wake-up call

MCALLEN, TX / ACCESSWIRE / March 25, 2021 / An estimated 400 million people worldwide have Type 2 diabetes. At home, 1 in 10 Americans has some form of the disease. According to the National Institutes of Health, the increasing rate of mortality among diabetics has now pushed it into the category of an epidemic.

Dr. Richard Steel of Alliance In Health – Diabetes Control Center (McAllen, Texas) says the diagnosis is becoming so common that many people simply accept the disease as part of growing older. “This disease is not just a ‘little inconvenience.’ It can and will kill you if you don’t take it seriously.” He points out that – although there are dozens of drugs to help manage the disease – so far, there’s nothing that will cure it.

“What is frustrating to me,” says Steele, “is that patients can prevent, or at least delay type 2 diabetes. It starts out as pre-diabetes when your body is waving a red flag. Warning! Change your lifestyle now!” Dr. Steel laments that when patients come to him, they are often on the brink of disaster. However, he says he can turn them around if they follow his advice. “It’s not rocket science. Think of it like this; when blood sugar goes high, it’s time to go low. Lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, and the number on the scale.”

Diabetes is more than just high blood sugar, so simply cutting back on sweets is not enough. It impacts the entire metabolic and vascular system causing heart disease, stroke, and circulation problems leading to blindness and amputation.

Dr. Steel tells his patients to:

  • Get off the couch. Inactivity is your enemy. You don’t have to join a kickboxing class; a 20-minute walk twice a day is a great start.
  • Reintroduce yourself to the grocery store. Shop the circumference where all the whole food is. i.e., fresh produce and protein. Steer clear of the inner aisles where shelves are stacked with processed food.
  • Don’t avoid the doctor. Ignoring the disease is a deadly mistake.

Finally, Dr. Steel believes that the way to halt this epidemic is to change attitudes and behavior starting with our children. “We are doing our children a disservice by allowing too much screen time, not insisting on exercise and sports and offering them processed food. They are learning unhealthy behavior that will come back to hurt them.”
