Dr. Robert Lieberson Discusses Symptoms and Treatments for Spinal Cord Injury

Knowing the signs and symptoms of spinal cord injury may lead to faster treatment and healing, says Dr. Robert Lieberson.

Injuries to the spine are more common than many may realize. There are a variety of ways to injure the spinal cord during an accident. Dr. Robert Lieberson built his own practice in the Bay Area before helping rebuild a struggling neurosurgery practice located in Sacramento. He also works as a mentor, teacher, and advisor to other medical professionals in the healthcare industry. His comments stem from years of experience in the medical field as a top California neurosurgeon.

PLEASANTON, CA / ACCESSWIRE / December 8, 2021 / “Spinal injuries are scary for many patients,” Dr. Robert Lieberson notes. “Some patients are quick to seek out a medical opinion after an accident, while others hope nothing is wrong and try to avoid a diagnosis. Many injuries aren’t diagnosed on the spot since the body still may be in some shock or face an adrenaline rush after the accident. If you know the signs and symptoms of more serious injuries-like a spinal cord injury-then you can make sure you get the medical support you need as soon as possible.”

He says the signs and symptoms of spinal cord injury include:

  • Numbness in the area of the injury along the spine
  • Weakness or numbness below the injury location
  • Feeling dizzy or unbalanced when sitting
  • Changes in bladder or bowel functions (including constipation or incontinence)
  • Difficulty moving while laying down
  • Discomfort when taking deep breaths or coughing
  • Finding it a struggle to eat or drink
  • Developing stiffness or pain in the neck or back

According to Dr. Robert Lieberson the treatment can include a range of different options. “Sometimes surgery is involved, but there are times when a brace or collar provides the needed stability for natural healing,” he notes. “Medical professionals always try to go with the least invasive solution, but we also want to find a treatment that works quickly. Spinal injuries aren’t something you should mess around with. In some cases, the diagnosis may just provide awareness, so you are more careful with how you move until you start to feel better.”

He warns that patients possibly facing a spinal injury should never consult a chiropractor or massage therapist before knowing the full extent of their injury. “There is a very high risk of exacerbating an injury like this in the wrong treatment setting,” he explains. “Too much pressure can cause irreparable damage. A physician can help you get referrals to the treatments that will work best for your injury.”

He says rehabilitation occurs at home and by managing pain while rebuilding supportive muscles for most patients. If an injury to the spinal cord is suspected, see a qualified medical professional as soon as possible, Dr. Robert Lieberson says.
