CHAPEL HILL, NC / ACCESSWIRE / November 6, 2023 / Renowned clinical pharmacy specialist, Dr. Brad Burton is extending his expertise to aspiring practicing oncology professionals in a mentorship program designed to empower the next generation of leaders in the field and encourage collaboration with current leaders in oncology. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Burton is dedicated to ensuring knowledgeable pharmacists play a pivotal role in oncology patient-care teams.
The program, initiated by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Foundation, addresses critical areas in pharmaceutical practice. It equips trainees with essential tools to navigate high-risk medications, and empowers them to make informed decisions for their patients. Dr. Burton believes in the importance of sharing knowledge in this space in order to have better outcomes and spark conversations on how things can also be improved. This is why the program is not only for new and upcoming professionals but also pharmacists who desire more knowledge and expertise in specific areas.
According to ASHP Foundation Vice President, Daniel J. Cobaugh, Pharm.D., FACCT, DABAT, the foundation is committed to providing training in areas identified by ASHP members as critical needs. These are domains where high-risk medications are prevalent, and the foundation’s focus lies in fostering well-informed pharmacists who are integral to patient-care teams.
One shining example of the impact of this mentorship program is Carolyn O’Donnell, R.Ph., BCOP, who participated in the oncology traineeship in 2011. O’Donnell’s newfound knowledge not only led to the development of a groundbreaking dosing protocol for anemic patients but also paved the way for her to transition into the information technology department, leveraging her oncology expertise to advance the development of standardized protocols.
Brad Burton, Pharm.D., played a pivotal role in overseeing the 2012 oncology traineeship. He emphasizes the “pay it forward” aspect of the program, noting that many trainees go on to become educators and leaders in their own workplaces. The traineeship exposes participants to a wide range of oncologic disease states and clinical topics, enriching their knowledge base for immediate application and future teaching endeavors.
Trainees like Kristine Vaden Tuttle, Pharm.D., BCPS, have found the experience to be invaluable. Tuttle highlights the immersive nature of the program, which included discussions with clinical pharmacists, tumor board sessions, and small group meetings. The program’s structure allows trainees to accumulate between 40 to 80 hours of distance education before engaging in hands-on training sessions at designated sites. As the world of healthcare and medicine are constantly changing, these trainings are important for new and experienced trainees to stay up to date with technology and medical practices.
Dr. Brad Burton also notes that this program was encouraged and supported by pharmacy leadership at The Johns Hopkins Hospital which is a testament to the broader institution’s commitment to sharing knowledge and advancing pharmacy practice, and ensuring that oncology pharmacists play a vital role in optimizing patient care at the bedside and in the boardroom.
Dr. Brad Burton is a highly accomplished and dedicated Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) who has significantly contributed to the field. Dr. Burton is an active member of various professional organizations, including the Hematology Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill General Alumni Association (GAA), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
