WASHINGTON, DC / ACCESSWIRE / October 4, 2024 / On September 17, World Patient Safety Day (WPSD), the Biden-Harris Administration announced new actions to improve patient and workforce safety during a White House Healthcare Safety Forum. These actions prominently included the commitment made by Patients for Patient Safety US (PFPS US) to work together with a diverse community of stakeholders to develop Project PIVOT, a year-long patient-led effort to identify and prioritize outcomes and experiences that, if reported, would contribute to system-wide learning. The White House recognized Project PIVOT as an exemplar of the “whole of society” engagement approach cited by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) in its 2023 Report to the President: A Transformational Effort on Patient Safety.
The launch of Project PIVOT by PFPS US as part of its 2024 WPSD Washington, DC Summit, focused on what matters most to patients when it comes to feeding back their experiences with preventable harm, missed or delayed diagnoses, and bias or discrimination in their healthcare journeys. “We started the Project PIVOT process by seeking wide diversity of input, focusing on experiences of minority mothers, persons with disabilities, and older patients, all of whom evidence shows have elevated risk for preventable harm,” said Sue Sheridan. “It was a phenomenal immersion in learning and community-building.”
Next steps include a Project PIVOT webinar event on October 29 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. to report initial learnings and frame activity for the next year. Anyone is welcome to attend. There is no fee, but registration with PFPS US is required.
The 2024 WPSD Summit would not have been possible without the financial support of organizations and individuals who contributed scholarship funds to help cover costs for those who otherwise would not have been able to attend,” said Martin Hatlie, PFPS US Co-Founder and Director of Advocacy. “Over 100 people joined us in DC for these activities; hundreds more participated virtually. Participation way surpassed what we’ve been able to achieve in past years,” added Hatlie.
Scholarship funding organizations included the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the John A. Harford Foundation, CoDEx, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation’s Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative, the Leapfrog Group, the BETA Healthcare Group, the American College of Emergency Physicians, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology,ECRI, Johns Hopkins University, the MedStar Health Institute for Quality and Safety, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, RLDatix and the aur Health Care Group.
Supporting individuals included the Hemmelgarn family, the Ullem family, Tor and Barbara Youngquist, and Jared Capouya.
“We counted on donations from those who believe the voice and lived experience of patients and our families matters, and they really stepped up,” added Hatlie. “We are very grateful to have such committed supporters.”
