Exactech Showcases Groundbreaking Research in AI and Personalized Surgical Technologies

GAINESVILLE, Fla., July 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Exactech, a global medical technology leader, presented 20 pioneering research studies at two of the industry’s most prestigious scientific meetings this month: 26th EFORT Annual Congress in Lyon, France, and the 2025 International Conference on Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery (CAOS) in Davos, Switzerland.

Spanning applications in machine learning, computer-assisted surgical navigation and joint balancing technologies, Exactech’s research highlights its expanding impact on personalized, data-driven orthopedics. The company showcased new clinical data on its Newton® knee balancing technology, GPS navigation technology and AI-powered innovations.

“These studies exemplify our commitment to continuously improve orthopedic surgery through research, data science and collaborative clinical development,” said Laurent Angibaud, Senior Vice President of Advanced Surgical Technologies at Exactech. “We are proud to support our surgeon partners with insights that not only validate current innovations but help shape the future of surgical decision-making.”

Exactech researchers presented several studies focused on the use of artificial intelligence to enhance image processing, planning and alignment classification, including:

  • CT-based segmentation and quantification of shoulder muscles to help in preoperative arthroplasty planning
  • Quantification of image segmentation uncertainty to enhance reliability and confidence in machine learning models
  • A novel unsupervised machine learning classification method for dynamic knee alignment during total knee arthroplasty, laying the groundwork for future knee phenotyping

Exactech’s Newton ligament balancing technology is prominently featured in five studies that emphasize its clinical impact and technological innovation. Notably, as part of the EFORT meeting, Pedro Torrijos, MD, PhD from Madrid, Spain, presented a retrospective study involving more than 2,800 TKA cases using a force-controlled gap-balancing technique with the Newton knee system. According to Dr. Torrijos, “These findings support the relevance of objective intraoperative ligament assessment for improving stability outcomes.”

During CAOS, Omar Naji, MD from Lunel, France, presented another large-scale study emphasizing the ability for Newton users to personalize their management of the soft-tissue balance during TKA.

“With Newton, we’re no longer estimating ligament balance—we’re measuring it,” said Dr. Naji. “This GPS technology allows for real-time, objective data during surgery, which improves accuracy and helps us achieve better functional outcomes for our patients.”
