As Extreme Heat Redefines Sports, HeatSense Brings Athlete Heat Response into View for Coaches and Parents

As conditions intensify, HeatSense shifts the focus from the environment to the individual—bringing visibility that teams have never had before.

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Extreme heat advisories are disrupting practices nationwide, and headlines of athletes collapsing are far too common. Most programs reference weather apps and WBGT guidelines that treat everyone the same—even though bodies respond to heat differently. Against this backdrop, HeatSense today launches a pioneering platform that gives parents and coaches real-time, athlete-level visibility into heat response.

HeatSense measures core body temperature, heart rate, and skin temperature through a lightweight, non-invasive sensor worn on the bicep or chest. Paired with Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), the app translates those signals into clear, coachable insights—so adjustments move from weather-based rules to athlete-based.

“As a parent, I know the worry that comes with watching kids train in the heat,” said Melissa Fortenberry, Founder and CEO of HeatSense. “Most of us haven’t been taught much about heat beyond checking a weather app—and weather treats everyone the same. I started HeatSense to change that by giving families and coaches visibility they’ve never had before. With HeatSense, rising heat strain is flagged before performance drops, so coaches know when to push, when to rest, and parents can finally see how their athlete is responding in real time.”

How it works

Athletes wear a lightweight, non-invasive sensor on the chest or bicep, which streams core temperature, skin temperature, and heart rate to the HeatSense app via Bluetooth. The app translates those signals into clear, real-time insights—giving coaches and parents moment-by-moment visibility into how each athlete is responding to heat.

What’s next

The Team Dashboard provides roster-wide visibility—showing how each player is responding in the moment to help staff pace drills, adjust rotations, and plan recovery. Evaluation deployments with teams and schools will begin soon; interested programs can request access.

Availability

HeatSense for individual athletes is available now. Sensors can be purchased at heatsense.com, with the app on the App Store and Google Play.
