Dr. Tim O’Connell, Founder and CEO of emtelligent, Inducted into Forbes Technology Council

VANCOUVER, BC, Sept. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Tim O’Connell, Founder and CEO of emtelligent, a leader in the development of clinical-grade medical AI software that transforms unstructured data into actionable insights, has been inducted into the Forbes Technology Council, an invitation-only community for world-class CIOs, CTOs, and business technology executives. The Council brings together leaders across all industries to share insights, solutions, predictions, and expertise on the future of business.

Dr. O’Connell was selected by a review committee based on his experience as a practicing radiologist and the depth of his experience in the development of emerging AI technologies for managing and making accessible the world’s unstructured healthcare data, which makes up more than 80% of health data. emtelligent’s Medical Language Engine and Clinical Workflow solutions work together to provide actionable insights at scale across healthcare organizations and give healthcare teams meaningful access to data that is otherwise locked up in inefficient and unusable manual systems. The company has thrived under Dr. O’Connell’s leadership to bring operational efficiency, increased value, and improved care outcomes to small and large health systems, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and clinical research organizations across the nation.

Dr. O’Connell has been an advocate for accessibility and interoperability in healthcare data for more than 20 years. From his work as a radiologist at multiple health authorities in British Columbia and as Clinical Assistant Professor and Vice Chair, Medical Informatics in the Department of Radiology at the University of British Columbia to founding and leading emtelligent, he knows first-hand that having access— or not— to meaningful data across healthcare teams and systems contributes significantly to patient outcomes.

Dr. O’Connell joined forces with Dr. Anoop Sarkar, PhD, a professor at Simon Fraser University and expert in natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence; Jeff O’Connell, an experienced technology operations management leader; and Dan Carriere, an expert in building and scaling biomedical startup ventures to form emtelligent in 2016.

Dr. O’Connell’s first contribution to the Forbes Technology Council is the recently published article, “From Strategy to Implementation: Leveraging Unstructured Health Data.” The article explores how effectively operationalizing unstructured clinical data, from strategy through execution, is critical for unlocking AI’s full potential in healthcare.

“I’m honored for the opportunity to join the Forbes Technology Council at such a significant crossroads in technology and care,” said Dr. O’Connell. “As healthcare evolves under growing data demands and technical complexity, the decisions we make about infrastructure, interoperability, and clinical accuracy will shape how AI and healthcare deliver value, not just in the future, but now. I look forward to contributing to a conversation that keeps those priorities front and center—measurable results, thoughtful design, and systems that work reliably at scale.”
