Bruin Biometrics Announces Program to Help Providers Access Reimbursement for Pressure Injuries Detected on Admission

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Bruin Biometrics, a platform company focused on digital solutions for the prevention and management of largely preventable conditions, today announced a new program to support their customers to obtain reimbursement for pressure injuries identified as Present on Admission (POA).

CMS guidelines assume that if a pressure injury was not documented as POA, it likely occurred during the hospital stay, making it a hospital-acquired condition and therefore non-reimbursable, and subject to penalties. This places hospitals at financial and reputational risk, particularly when visual assessments miss early-stage and deep tissue pressure injuries.

In 2024, the Provizio® SEM Scanner was assigned a specific ICD-10-PCS procedure code, XX2KXP9, by CMS. This code recognizes the scanner’s use in measuring and monitoring sub-epidermal moisture (SEM) for pressure injury assessment, proving if there was a pressure injury upon admittance. In combination with the SEM POA test, the code is a valuable tool for providers seeking reimbursement for the care they properly provide for the prevention and management of pressure injuries detected on admission.

Having CMS recognition delivers significant benefits across clinical, financial, and operational domains. It supports value-based care initiatives and helps protect hospital operating margins by reducing the financial risk associated with undetected or misclassified pressure injuries. Additionally, it improves risk management practices and enhances POA documentation, contributing to better patient outcomes.

By enabling early, objective detection of pressure injuries, the Provizio SEM Scanner helps reduce hospital-acquired pressure injury rates, aligning with CMS quality reporting and compliance standards. It strengthens clinical workflows by providing evidence-based support for reimbursement claims, ensuring that hospitals are compensated appropriately for the high-quality care they deliver.

Martin Burns, CEO of Bruin Biometrics, stated, “If hospitals are not scanning, they are not being paid for pressure injury prevention and management care they are diligently providing. Even moderate sized systems are foregoing millions of dollars of reimbursement every year.”
