UpRight Science Brings Together Expert Advisory Board to Advance Balance as an Essential Health Measure

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — With Falls Prevention Awareness Week approaching Sept. 21–25, UpRight Science today announced the advisory board supporting its work to establish balance as an essential measure of health and expand the usage of its FDA-cleared balance software.

The announcement comes as the national spotlight turns toward one of the most serious threats to healthy aging. Falls are the leading cause of injury among Americans ages 65 and older, with more than 14 million older adults, or roughly one in four, reporting a fall each year. UpRight Science believes better visibility into balance can help make this critical aspect of health easier to understand, measure, and track over time.

The UpRight Science Advisory Board includes:

• Joseph Shurman, MD, Advisory Board Chair. Dr. Shurman is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician whose career has spanned clinical practice, medical leadership, research, and education. He is a former Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and former Chair of Pain Management at Scripps Memorial Hospital, and briefly served as Co-Chair of Palliative Care. He also served as Medical Director of Clinical Research for the Anesthesia Medical Service Group (270 physicians), which covered all major hospitals in San Diego, and was formerly Chair of the pain management group. His major focus is risk management, particularly through his nationally recognized “Share the Risk” model, which was featured in a front-cover article and became recognized nationally at Scripps. The model was supported by the DEA, and Dr. Shurman also lectured on the model at a Department of Justice CME meeting.
• Frederick “Ted” Carrick, DC, PhD, MS-HPEd. Dr. Carrick is Professor of Neurology at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, Adjunct Professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and Professor of Neurology, and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research in association with the University of Cambridge. His research and clinical work have encompassed vestibular rehabilitation, movement disorders, traumatic brain injury, concussion, and other neurological conditions, bringing important expertise in the complex systems that enable balance and human movement.
• Crystal Gurin. Gurin is a media, marketing, and digital business executive with more than three decades of experience building companies and new market categories. A longtime publisher of eMarketer and co-founder of pioneering digital advertising company Cybereps, she brings UpRight extensive experience translating emerging technologies and ideas into concepts that businesses and consumers can understand and adopt.
• Angela Murray, RN, BScN, MN. Murray is a healthcare executive and strategic advisor with more than 30 years of experience spanning healthcare strategy, market access, and health economics. During her tenure with Baxter and Hillrom, she led the global Market Access and Health Economics and Outcomes Research function, helping translate clinical and economic evidence into strategies supporting reimbursement, funding, and adoption of healthcare technologies across global markets. She brings UpRight a systems-level perspective on what it takes to move a promising health innovation from clinical value to meaningful adoption and impact.
• Isaac Treitel. Treitel is the co-founder and Managing Partner of MedPro Investors and director of TriState Ventures, with more than 20 years of experience investing in and advising early-stage life science and technology companies. His work evaluating emerging technologies and helping young companies navigate financial and operational growth gives UpRight an experienced perspective on building and scaling a new category of health technology.
