MontoHealth is building the action layer for healthcare AI

The company is researching how AI agents can move beyond conversations to securely complete routine healthcare work.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Healthcare can perform robotic surgery, sequence a genome and monitor a heart from a wrist. Yet moving an appointment, routing a refill, coordinating a referral or resolving an insurance question can still mean phone calls, handoffs and manual updates across systems.

MontoHealth is building the action layer for healthcare AI.

It isn’t because healthcare lacks software. Over the last two decades, much of healthcare has been digitized. But digitizing a workflow isn’t the same as automating it.

Healthcare organizations operate across EHRs, scheduling systems, billing platforms, patient portals and other applications, each surrounded by privacy requirements, security controls and integration constraints. The result is often more software, but people still doing the work between the software.

MontoHealth is working on that gap

Instead of adding another system for healthcare teams to operate, MontoHealth is developing an action layer that can work across existing systems—understanding requests, coordinating workflows and taking permitted actions within defined boundaries.

The goal isn’t another dashboard. It’s less work between the dashboards.

Starting with patient communication

MontoHealth is starting with common patient interactions around appointments, prescription refills, referrals, billing and insurance questions, after-hours requests and multilingual communication.

But the conversation is only the entry point. When a patient asks to move an appointment or follow up on a referral, something needs to happen behind it. MontoHealth is researching how AI agents can carry that work forward across connected systems, with defined permissions and human involvement when judgment or approval is required.

The broader research extends into healthcare operations, data and research—exploring how specialized agents could work together without giving any single system unrestricted access or authority. MontoHealth remains under active development and is inviting a limited group of healthcare organizations into its Founding Physician Pilot Program to test early capabilities and help shape what the platform tackles next.
