BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS / ACCESSWIRE / January 13, 2025 / The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) is honored to announce that it has been awarded a generous $27,266 grant from the American Legion Child Well-Being Foundation. This funding will support the NCCS’s “Journey of Hope: Transportation Assistance Fund” project for the 2025 program year.
Childhood cancer affects approximately 16,000 families across the United States each year, presenting not only a devastating medical diagnosis but also an overwhelming financial burden. When parents hear the words “your child has cancer,” they are thrust into a world filled with emotional and financial challenges that extend far beyond the hospital walls.
One of the most pressing challenges families face is the cost and accessibility of transportation to medical treatment centers. Many lack reliable vehicles, live in rural areas with limited transportation options, or struggle with high fuel and parking costs. These barriers can result in delayed or missed medical appointments, derailing a child’s treatment plan and jeopardizing their chances of survival.
The NCCS deeply understands that the best medical care in the world is meaningless if a child cannot access it. That’s why the Transportation Assistance Fund is the largest form of support provided by the NCCS, ensuring children with cancer have access to lifesaving treatment-no matter their circumstances.
With the support of this grant from the American Legion Child Well-Being Foundation, the NCCS will be able to expand its critical assistance to families across the nation. The funding will directly aid families in need, ensuring children receive the care they deserve while alleviating the emotional and financial stress their parents face. Additionally, the grant will underwrite the creation, production, and dissemination of updated marketing materials to raise awareness of this vital program further.
“There is an urgent need for increased support to help families navigate the complex journey of childhood cancer,” said Jessica Cook, Vice President of Patient and Family Services at the NCCS. “Thanks to the generosity of the American Legion Child Well-Being Foundation, no family will have to face the heartbreaking choice between getting their child to treatment and meeting their basic needs. Together, we can make a tangible difference in these children’s lives.”
Since its establishment in 1954, the American Legion Child Well-Being Foundation has contributed significantly to children’s and youth’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare by supporting programs and activities that benefit their well-being. The NCCS is proud to partner with such a distinguished organization in its mission to ensure that every child with cancer has access to the care they need.
