Medtech Startup Kahun Launches Next-Gen AI Diagnosis for Doctors

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL / ACCESSWIRE / January 21, 2020 / Israel-based medtech startup Kahun has announced the release of an open beta for its advanced diagnosis web application.

Kahun’s core application, which is already used by hundreds of physicians and medical students throughout Israel, is a sophisticated AI-guided application designed to bridge the gap between the huge amounts of text-based articles and clinical decision making. Through this, Kahun brings the wealth of scientific knowledge right to the physician as they are thinking and managing a patient case.

Kahun has built a knowledge graph which describes clinical knowledge from medical books and articles. The Kahun knowledge graph stores over 5 million relations between diseases, findings, labs, complications, and risk factors, all based around internal medicine. Kahun has also developed an AI engine that utilizes the knowledge graph and is intended to assist physicians with guided help in diagnosis, anamnesis, workup planning, and access to clinical reasoning.

Although founded in 2018, Kahun came to the fore during the COVID-19 pandemic as it harnessed its AI capabilities to tap into the masses of newly published papers studying the COVID-19 virus. Using Kahun’s knowledge graph, doctors were able to screen patients and assess their risk for a severe coronavirus, which had also been reported through a joint study with Hasharon hospital whose results displayed the efficacy of Kahun.

The beta release will see Kahun reach a wider audience, with doctors from around the world able to utilize Kahun and get assistance in managing the diagnosis process of their patients.

Known for co-founding Waze and accompanying leading Israeli transportation app Moovit into an Intel-brokered exit through his investment, serial entrepreneur Uri Levine joined Kahun as an investor and Chairman. Levine emphasized Kahun’s immense potential to help doctors working in the field, saying:

“All medical knowledge in the world today is in text and the only way to make sense out of it is if a doctor or medical staff are reading it, but what if we could convert that into data and build apps to use it? This is exactly what we do.”

Medical intern Yohai Shraga further attested to Kahun’s utility: “Whenever I find myself stuck with a patient, or I can’t seem to grasp a diagnosis, Kahun comes in handy and has become my go-to gear to have in a tense hospital shift. I can use it to make sure I don’t miss anything, or to consult with just before turning to a senior physician.”

A number of novel AI-based applications have been released in the past 12 months, although most are limited to basic symptom checking and geared to patients. Kahun has greater capabilities within that respect, and is designed to give medical professionals tools for making evidence based decisions tailored to their patients. When compared to other “big data”-based apps, Kahun is uniquely able to provide relevant clinical links from medical literature, supporting its insights.

By harnessing advanced algorithmic AI, Kahun can complement clinicians and support their clinical reasoning. In addition to suggesting the most likely diseases, the tool offers a plan for the next steps including the best questions to ask, physical tests that were missed, or further lab work and imaging that is required in order to narrow down the diagnosis.
