The Academic Leadership Group Welcomes Karen Kashmanian Oates to its Higher Education Consulting Practice

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Academic Leadership Group (ALG), an industry-leading consultancy for leadership excellence and innovation in academia, is delighted to welcome Karen Kashmanian Oates, a nationally recognized higher education leader, to its higher education consulting practice.

“Karen’s direct experience in leading university-wide initiatives at both the dean and provost level is a tremendous resource for our clients,” explained Jennifer Stine, the co-founder of ALG and lead of the higher education consulting practice. “Her depth of experience across multiple roles, including serving as deputy division director at NSF, coupled with her ability to drive innovation from within the university, will be a real asset for academic leaders looking for knowledge and inspiration to advance their missions.”

Karen realized innovative initiatives at multiple universities, including at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she served seven years as the inaugural Dean of Arts and Sciences, and at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, where she was the inaugural Provost and Executive Vice President and established the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement and a national dissemination program, Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibilities (SENCER).

Karen also served as Department Chair, Associate Dean, and Program Director at George Mason University, where she led the development of a new college, the College of Integrative Studies (initially New Century College). Prior to this role, she was Deputy Director for Undergraduate Education (EHR/DUE) at the National Science Foundation, where she was charged with supporting innovative programs to strengthen undergraduate and graduate education and helped revitalize American entrepreneurship and competitiveness.

“I am delighted to join the Academic Leadership Group,” Karen commented, “and I look forward to expanding my consulting activities, particularly designing and leading workshops and lectures in areas that include leading change, faculty development, academic careers, and building collaborative cultures.”

On December 6, Karen will lead an ALG webinar on “Thriving (Not Just Surviving) In An Academic Career.” The webinar will discuss and provide a strategy to move an academic career forward amidst the many pressures academics face today, and it will demonstrate the skills and experiences that contribute creatively and thoughtfully to providing solutions.

Karen’s many honors include the Bruce Alberts Award for excellence in science education reform and the Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest civilian honor presented by the City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 2012, she was inducted as an education fellow into the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, and in 2016, she was designated a Sigma Xi distinguished lecturer. She leads efforts with the National Academy of Engineers, including the Global Grand Challenge Scholar program to establish a WPI chapter and international chapters in Armenia and the Republic of Georgia. Karen received her bachelor’s degree from RIT, and her Ph.D. from George Washington University in Biochemistry.
